Pyrolave is natural volcanic lava stone extracted from our quarry in central France. As tough as stone, with all the durability and beauty of enamel. It is chemically inert – it will never burn, stain or erode – and it can be glazed in every colour and shade imaginable.
RESOURCES
Volvic lava is considered extremely rare because the lava flows are located within the NATIONAL PARK of the AUVERGNE VOLCANOS with the extraction sites. The lava in the Nugere crater is unique across the world & being of such quality & size that it permits enamelling & firing. All aspects of extraction are carefully monitored by Pyrolave as well as the French administrative departments.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Before Pyrolave architecture uses the Volvic lava stone, there is a two-year study of each extraction area. The result is an Administrative Authorisation for Extraction within a Classified Zone report that details: The analysis and control of direct, indirect, temporar,y and permanent effects upon the environment, a landscape study, a noise, dust and vibration analysis, hydro-geologic and hydrologic evaluations, and proof that there is no risk of pollution due to hydrocarbon, organic or mineral waste.
HUMAN HEALTH
The ancient lava quarries were a way of life & vital to the local economies. Due to the stone being extremely heavy, it was very difficult to move over long distances. However, the importance of the stone was such that the quarry owner built Volvic railway station to link into the national network & expand the market across France.
SOCIAL EQUITY
Environmental limitations are strictly adhered to, and each extraction area is subject to administrative authorization following a 2-year study of the zone. Environmental controls & inspections are frequent. Studies that record the impact upon the environment are carried out & restoration of the sites after extraction is compulsory.
