Environmental sustainability was a prime concern at every stage of the design, from choosing a design language that would translate to minimal waste generated in production, to applying the display system to the site in a way that incorporates existing features and works with the site’s heat capacity insulation. Digital technology is used to cater to the need for change in a display showroom.
The proposed showroom, designed for retailing Akari light sculptures designed by Isamu Noguchi, is a celebration of simple geometry. The basic shapes that Noguchi employed in his Akari sculptures inform the design vocabulary of a demountable and adjustable display system that minimizes waste in its production. Designed with the conservation of the existing structure of Noguchi’s Long Island City studio, the display system invites viewers to experience not only each Akari individually but also the collective morphological transformation.
