Graphic elevation of the residential house showing accessibility. The project is a residential house with accessibility features that accommodate the needs of elderly people. The site is an outdated house in a rural village in Inner Mongolia. The design tries to maintain some of the old structure but will increase the use of empty spaces and make circulation easier.
The floor plan shows the proposed and new design based on existing structures of the house. The major point is to design for the special needs. It provides dimensions for people using wheelchairs, such as hallway distance and furniture heights. All pathways have ramps and handrails and increased height by 21 inches. This is often used in Northern houses for drainage, bad climate, and pests. Make sure interior floors are smooth, dry, and warm.
The dining tables and kitchen countertops are based on wheelchair heights. So the residents can perform independently. The materials and lighting remain simple to show contrasts.
Trees are kept, and water ponds are added in the yard to improve aesthetics. So residents can exercise, walk around, and enjoy the views. Large windows are used to maximize sunlight. Overall, it is beneficial for people’s health.
The bathroom design follows the ADA compliance rules. The shower is separated, and handrails are installed. Materials are black and white to show contrast, which is good for vision.
The master bedroom is connected to the bathroom. Furniture is placed and selected for comfortable usage and outreach. The whole residential house takes into consideration of the possible needs of elderly residents and tries to provide a comfortable environment.
